Redding Record Searchlight (1992)

From the Record Searchlight featuring one of Nora's babies - the first baby born in 1992

Lezlie’s labor began at around 3:00 AM on December 31, 1991. She had planned a New Year Party at her home for that evening. When her contractions started, she called her guests and informed them that it could be a birthday party too. I arrived at her home at 8:00 PM to monitor her labor. There were about twenty or thirty friends and family present.

The question of the night was whether the baby or the New Year would come first. She was getting very close to birthing her baby when the clock struck midnight. The room was filled with ten or fifteen women as her son came into the world on January 1, 1992 at 12:08 AM. One of those women was the head public health nurse for Shasta County. She called the OB department at Mercy Medical Center to see if there was anyone in labor or who had delivered and they had no one there. She informed them that she had just been present at a home birth so that the birth would be identified as the first birth in Shasta County for 1992. It was an amazing event for the Winberry family and a first for me in my midwifery practice.
